Our Journey : The We Can Legacy
"We Can” is a team of young social innovators from the alumni of the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD) dedicated to bringing comprehensive socio-economic development nationwide. Collaborating with elected leaders and local governments, we devise and implement innovative social programs using unconventional strategies.

The SAGY Project, a collaboration between Our Team and MP Dean Kuriakose, has significantly impacted the Idukki Parliamentary constituency. Peruvanthanam and Vathikudy villages exemplify VCAN’s successful implementation of various initiatives, including an Anti-Drug Campaign, menstrual hygiene awareness, and Yoga Day celebrations. Programs like Kuttikoottam for child development and biodiversity tourism projects showcase their multifaceted approach.
MILES, led by VCAN Constituency Management and AKM Ashraf, MLA, aimed to empower the Manjeshwar community through the “Ente Schoolilekku” project, focusing on education. A 60-day survey involving over 1500 individuals identified critical needs aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals, prioritizing improvements in education quality, infrastructure, and accessibility for long-term positive change.
Introducing KREA COMMUNE: An ambitious project initiated by MLA Najeeb Kanthapuram of Perinthalmanna, in collaboration with our VCAN team. Together, we’re working to uplift 100 villages into Smart Villages, prioritizing holistic development over mere technological advancements.
Our pioneering internship program“Walk With MLA”, ,offers students from esteemed universities a unique opportunity for hands-on governance experience.
Through a carefully curated suite of programs, including internships, Panchayat Secretary sessions, and Legislative Assembly meetings, students gain invaluable insights into local governance.
A transformative initiative led by MLA P.C. Vishnunadh, designed to empower the youth of the Kundara constituency. Launched in November 2023, our program offers vital skills and knowledge through innovative initiatives like “Connect Leaders” and “Scholars Cap.”
ALIVE, led by Shri Anwar Sadath MLA and powered by VCAN, revolutionizes education in Aluva through two impactful projects. “Career Vandi” empowers 13,000 high school students across 75 schools, guiding them towards central universities and diverse career paths. “Lakshyam” extends invaluable job orientations to 1,000 college students, laying a robust foundation for their professional journeys.
We’re leading the Chirak Career CAP initiative in collaboration with MLA Saneesh Kumar Joseph to revolutionize education in Chalakudy, India. Our focus is on getting more students enrolled in central universities, aiming to uplift educational opportunities and transform the knowledge economy of the constituency.
Jointly organized by Kasaragod District Panchayat, WE CAN, and AIITECH, Connect 2022 was a resounding success, attracting around 200 students and parents from across the district. The orientation program aimed to acquaint Kasaragod residents with Central Universities, their courses, admissions, and training programs.
VCAN’s Career Path program connected 20,000 students with top universities, while their UYARE project in Wayanad helped 600 SC/ST students excel in exams. With tutors and a help desk, 346 students cleared the CUET exam, showcasing the impact of focused initiatives in promoting education and development
Prathyasha, a VCAN initiative, empowers Vaikom’s higher secondary students for prestigious higher education through targeted CUET training for 600 students, flexible online classes, and a dedicated help desk from February to March.”
Oommen Chandi Vidhya Jyoti, led by Puthuppally MLA Chandi Oommen and developed by We Can Social Innovators, empowers higher secondary students with awareness classes, club formations, specialized training, and ongoing support. Focused on common university entrance exams, it prepares students holistically for higher education success
Envisioned by T.J. Vinod, MLA, and implemented in collaboration with We Can Social Innovators and Elance, “MLA’s Young Commerce Brigade” is a comprehensive program designed to foster a community of young entrepreneurs. Targeting high school and higher secondary school students, the initiative equips aspiring individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the dynamic world of commerce through a series of interactive workshops, seminars, and developmental activities.
FLARE EDU-CADETS in Sultan Bathery isn’t just about education; it’s a transformative effort to empower and inspire local youth. The goal is to equip students with essential skills for success in today’s world, while also nurturing their unique talents and ambitions. By focusing on holistic development, FLARE EDU-SCHOLAR aims to create a generation ready to seize endless opportunities.
Mayor Shri. M K Varghese led Thrissur Corporation’s Thilakkam project in 2022 to reinforce Thrissur’s UNESCO Learning City status. Thilakkam focused on five pillars: knowledge, happiness, technology, earning, and upskilling, promoting lifelong learning.
We Can Social Innovators collaborated on sub-projects like Learning City Cadets and Pathfinder, highlighting Thrissur’s dedication to becoming a knowledge hub.
The Smart Brigade project, which successfully transformed the educational experience for over 500+ students in Palakkad was designed and executed by We Can Social Innovators in the Palakkad constituency under the guidance of MLA Mr. Shafi Parambil. Workshops were conducted in 5 colleges, 17 high schools, and 17 higher-secondary schools, equipping students with vital skills for success.
The “Kannur Cleaning Squad” project, a collaboration between the Kannur District Administration and the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), aimed to spruce up the city’s urban spaces, vital for its tourist appeal. Focusing on five key tourist centers, it sought to enhance cleanliness, attract visitors, and instill civic pride.

Kasargod commercial project
The Kasargod Internship program for term 1 (July 2021 to August 2021) was a resounding success. With the esteemed M. V. Govindan, Minister of Local Self Governments and Excise, Government of Kerala, inaugurating the program, 20 students participated in a total of 18 projects and 2 studies under the Department of Commerce, Kasargod district (Vyavasaya Vakuppu). Notably, one of the projects, Loka Kasargod Sabha, was successfully implemented.

During the second term of the Kasargod internship program, our interns from Malayalam University successfully delivered CUET (Common Universities Entrance Test) orientation sessions for Plus Two (higher secondary) students. These sessions attracted over 600 students seeking valuable insights about the CUET exam.
Need assessment in Manjeshwar
In Manjeshwar, 3 internship programs were conducted which prioritized comprehensive need assessment in Manjeshwar, Kasaragod, India. During November and December 2023, a dedicated group of 20 interns visited all panchayats (village councils) within the region. Through focused group discussions, they identified development needs across various demographics. The study specifically included youth, older adults, women, children, Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) communities, along with administrators. Key themes explored in the discussions included health, education, women’s empowerment, and the specific needs of the coastal region. This data will be instrumental in guiding future development efforts in Manjeshwar.

As part of “The KREA Commune Project,” an initiative focused on developing 100 model villages, students participated in internships that were primarily dedicated to fieldwork and needs assessments in the selected areas. The “KREA 100 Brigade Project,” provided a valuable platform for students to gain practical experience. The project included “Genesis,” a two-day camp where 400 students acquired their skills in conducting needs assessments for the targeted area.
Sansad Aadarsh Gram Yojana
Our team of interns from Mariyan College and St. Antony’s College Peruvanthanam completed a successful one-month internship at Peruvanthanam Panchayat in Idukki. This internship focused on conducting a comprehensive needs assessment and formulating a development policy document for the panchayat. Throughout the internship, interns received valuable training and workshops from KILA faculty, equipping them with the skills necessary to assess needs and design a development plan. This project will serve as a valuable resource for Peruvanthanam Panchayat as they move forward with their development initiatives.
Walk with MLA Irikkur
5-month internship – Walk with MLA was an internship – 10 interns were there – interns were allowed to understand the government system right from the grama panchayat, to the Rajya Sabha. They visited the Grama panchayats, block panchayats, District Panchayat and collectorate, the Legislative Assembly of Kerala, and the Rajya Sabha. The interns were able to talk with the speaker of the legislative assembly and other key functionaries of the government in this internship. The interns at the same time assisted the MLA in his daily official work. In the second term of this internship, the interns were lucky to visit the Ezhimala Naval Academy in Kannur.
Field visits in Kundara
A group of 15 interns from Calicut University participated in a program focused on understanding community needs within the local governing systems. Through field visits, they gained practical experience in scientific data collection methods, including resource mapping and focus group discussions. Their findings were compiled into a report and submitted to the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Kundara.
UNESCO Learning City project
The UNESCO Learning City project by the Thrissur Municipal Corporation offered several internship opportunities. A total of 6 internship programs were part of this project. 12 interns were allowed to work with innovative projects like SENSE, Civil Aspirants Nexus, Career Path, Learning City cadets, Career Cell, and CUET orientation program.

Having graduated from the esteemed Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), we emerged equipped with expertise in Development Policy, Social Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Local Governance. Our education wasn’t just theoretical; it immersed us in real-world skills like policy formulation, field research, and stakeholder engagement, preparing us to collaborate effectively with government bodies to address community needs.
Our journey began at the Vibrant Community Action Network (VCAN), where we experienced firsthand the impact of grassroots development efforts across diverse demographics. Motivated by these experiences, three of us came together and formed “We Can”, driven by a singular focus on socio-economic progression.
Through this journey, we’ve learned that combining established expertise with youthful energy creates a powerful force for social change. Our efforts are strengthened by a dedicated team of young professionals skilled in social research, ensuring that our initiatives are both informed and impactful. As a team, our goal is to pioneer new approaches to social innovation that resonate with the community and inspire meaningful government collaboration.
